Georgia pair accused of fraud arrested on felony charges

A six-month long investigation by the Georgia Board of Workers’ Compensation ended with the arrest of two people. Various accusations of fraudulent acts resulted in multiple felony charges. Of those arrested, one apparently has ties to a MLB player in another state.

According to authorities, one man suffered a workplace injury back in 1988. At the time, the workers’ compensation board acknowledged that the injury was catastrophic. In the years that followed, the man submitted health care invoices to the board that totaled about $40,000. The investigation apparently determined that those invoices might have been fraudulent. Additionally, it is believed that he may have been running his own business while still receiving total disability benefits from his initial injury.

The second person arrested was a friend of the man. Investigators accused her of billing the insurance company for services that she claimed to have provided for her friend’s injuries. Again, the results of the investigation revealed that those services might not have actually taken place.

Felony charges for the Georgia man include conspiring to commit crimes, insurance fraud and theft by deception. As the investigation is ongoing, it is strongly suspected that both will face additional insurance fraud allegations. Felony charges that result in a criminal conviction can carry steeper penalties than misdemeanors, although both typically require careful attention to the details of the case and any related evidence. Preparing to handle the charges often includes thoughtful consideration of seeking to negotiate a plea agreement or asserting innocence before the court by proceeding to a trial on the merits of the accusations.
