Reports of domestic violence rise during winter in Georgia

Reports of domestic violence are almost always taken seriously. When winter rolls around, Georgia shelters and resource centers tend to prepare themselves for an increase in calls and victims that they help. As claims of domestic violence incidents rise, it is important for those accused to remain knowledgeable and up-to-date concerning their rights as well.

Reportedly, domestic violence incidents tend to go up during the winter months. In particular, from November to January in Georgia, the incidents tend to be at an all time high. A number of factors are thought to contribute to the overall increase.

For starters, winter brings with it cold weather, which tends to keep people indoors in potentially volatile situations. As the holidays roll in and out, drinking tends to increase and bills may put pressure on already strained finances. In general, some families tend to experience more stress and arguments during this time of year, which may add strain on top of everything else. Sometimes, all of these factors may be a bad mix that results in domestic violence incidents.

Domestic violence charges are serious and should be handled as such. In some cases, an order of protection may even be sought against the person who is alleged to have committed the offense. However, just because someone has been accused of domestic violence does not mean they are guilty. The accused might find it beneficial to educate themselves concerning the pertinent Georgia laws that may apply to their case. By staying knowledgeable and up-to-date with respect to any pending criminal charges and applicable local court procedures, those accused of domestic violence incidents may find that this is a solid foundation for a proper defense.
